It’s here! VTDigger has launched its 2024 General Election Guide ahead of the Nov. 5 general election.View the guideThe Vermont secretary of state’s office is preparing ballots this week to mail to registered voters and town clerks across the state. For all statewide offices, incumbents are running for reelection against challengers from at least one other party, though in most cases incumbents have a significant edge in name recognition and fundraising. Down ballot, Vermont Senate and House races are animated by local issues but also deep concerns about the cost of living in the state amid ever-increasing property taxes and a housing shortage. In both chambers, the Democratic Party is defending a historic supermajority, which has allowed legislators to override the veto of Republican Gov. Phil Scott a dozen times on significant bills during the two sessions of the last biennium. Scott and his allies are campaigning for candidates they believe can flip seats and change that dynamic, particularly in the state Senate, where the deaths and retirements of longtime legislators have led to a significant number of open seats.In-person voting for Vermont’s general election will take place on Nov. 5. However, all currently registered voters should also automatically receive a ballot in the mail before Oct. 1. Ballots can be returned to town and city clerks as late as Election Day, in person or by mail — though those using the U.S. Postal Service should ensure they send ballots early enough to account for potential delays. VTDigger’s 2024 General Election Guide includes:Instructions on how to register and vote — early, by mail or in person on Election Day Candidate profiles featuring biographical information, responses to survey questions about the issues facing Vermonters and individual financial disclosures Voter tools translated in 14 of the most commonly spoken languages in Vermont, plus American Sign Language.  Pages highlighting the different county, statewide and federal races A database of campaign finance information for statewide candidates An explainer on who does what in Vermont state government A roundup of VTDigger’s latest 2024 election coverage Plus: reminders of important dates, help finding your polling place, and Senate and House district-lookup toolsWhile everybody at VTDigger contributes to its election coverage, we would like to highlight the specific work of product design director Taylor Haynes, data reporter Erin Petenko, senior editors Natalie Williams and Kristen Fountain, director of membership and engagement Libbie Sparadeo, and editor-in-chief Paul Heintz for their work on this special project. Sign up for the Daily Digger email newsletter for the latest updates.Read the story on VTDigger here: VTDigger launches 2024 general election guide.
