FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - There are just 48 days left until the 2024 Presidential election, and with Sept. 17 being National Voter Registration Day, organizers were out urging community members to register to vote.  Members with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) were out in front of Fresno City Hall this morning to encourage residents to register.  "So today is National Voter Registration Day," said Evelyn DeJesus, with the American Federation of Teachers. "We're here to make sure that everyone has a voice." The bus is part of the "Get out the Vote" tour expected to make several stops across the country.  The goal is to raise the number of registered voters, especially among the Latino community.  "Our Latino community needs to unite and we are so excited to encourage you and be all the way along and be along the way with you to be able to help you with registering to vote," said Indira Salaverri, with the Educational and Leadership Foundation.  The push to register also came from state leaders; in a statement, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber wrote: "Voting is one of the most important things we can do as citizens in a democracy. When we vote, we don't just choose our representatives, we shape the policies that impact our lives daily." So, who is eligible to vote in California? Voters must be US Citizens and at least 18 years old on or before election day.  Can homeless people vote in California? People who are unhoused or even incarcerated in county jail awaiting trial can also vote.  Those who are not eligible to vote are those currently serving time in state or federal prison and those found mentally incompetent by a court.  The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 21, for more information or to register to vote click here.
