SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The family of Aamonte Hadley are demanding answers after dying inside of San Francisco’s county jail earlier this month. On Tuesday, they are speaking out and calling for information regarding her sudden death. On Sept. 3, 22-year-old Aamonte Hadley was found unresponsive and pronounced dead in San Francisco County Jail. On Tuesday, her family and community leaders spoke out calling for accountability. ‘Work to do’: Mayor Breed responds to KRON4 poll showing low approval rating "Justice would have been for her to be home with her family breathing," said Cat Brooks with the Anti Police-Terror Project. Hadley and another woman were charged with several felonies in connection to a series of armed robberies. Her family says she was young and made mistakes but shouldn’t have been placed in jail for two years awaiting trial. "She deserved her day in court, she deserved her day in court, she deserved a chance to live," said Hadley's aunt Patrice Bolton. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins in a statement says Hadley’s in-custody death is alarming and tragic. Jenkins added, “(Hadley) was detained pre-trial because of the public safety risk she posed and was charged with serious crimes. Casually attributing blame to me and my office for doing our job is not helpful.” "Was this the punishment... did they intend to hand out a death sentence?" said civil rights attorney Adante Pointer. Over the last year, Hadley had requested she be released to a mental health diversion program but was denied. Her family believes this was a mistake by the DA. But Jenkins feels differently, saying, “the court denied defense counsel’s numerous requests for mental health diversion because it was not warranted in this case. Had defense counsel actually worked in their client’s best interest and prepared to settle or go to trial sooner, this tragedy may have been avoided. Sadly, we will never know" and offered her condolences. Gun violence flares in Antioch following death of Elijah Scales "Those who look down from up high and have the nerve to say they should have taken a deal," Pointer said. The case is currently being investigated by the Department of Police Accountability, the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office and the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office.
