Mulvane Fire Rescue said around 2:40 p.m., crews responded to a house fire on the "far south end of town." While they were on their way, city utility crews told firefighters flames were visible from the roof of the house. Mulvane Fire said that area of town has four-inch steel water mains and the City of Mulvane was not receiving water from Augusta, its normal supplier, that afternoon. Kansas-based cult leaders convicted of forcing children to work 16-hour days without pay "Luckily, Mulvane does have wells and a treatment plant to handle such outages, but out of an abundance of caution, extra water tenders out of Butler County Fire District #3 and Sumner County Fire 9 added an additional 7,000 gallons of available water. Cowley County Fire District IV & Derby Fire and Rescue also responded," Mulvane Fire said. Mulvane Fire said there were around 14,000 gallons of water on the scene, and only 2,000 were used. There was significant damage in the attic, over the kitchen, and in the living room of the home. Two adults, two children, two dogs and one snake were displaced by the fire, but there were no injuries. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, and the occupant notified the fire department in a timely fashion, which allowed crews to put out the fire quickly.
