TOPEKA (KSNT) - Tuesday, September 17, is National Voter Registration Day and one group hit up college campuses in Kansas, including Washburn, to make sure young voters are ready to vote for the General Election. "Loud Light" and other organizations set up camp in the union at Washburn. Here, they helped young voters register, update their registration, and spread the message that it's important to go out and vote. "It's really important that we do it as a sign of community care, and it's especially important that we focus on young people because young people tend to vote at lower rates because it can be a very intimidating process, and we just want to help break down some of those barriers to access the vote," Chloe Chaffin with Loud Light said. According to the Kansas Secretary of State, Kansas has surpassed two million registered voters ahead of the November election. Over 83,000 new voters have registered since January. All of which is very important to Chaffin. "That's how we determine outcomes in our community," She said. "That's how we vote for elective representatives who are going to be responsive to the people and focus on the issues we care about, and are going to ultimately help us take care of our neighbors." While Loud Light helped young voters register Tuesday, that's not all they are doing to prepare people for the November 5 election. The group is making sure voters know what to expect. "And so that people know where to go and vote, know they're voting for and have nonpartisan resources to be, like, engaged around the election," Loud Light Vice President Anita Alexander said. The last day to register to vote in Kansas is October 15. If you would like to know about more events that Loud Light offers leading up to that deadline, click here.
