SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield community is asking for drivers to stop speeding on all city streets, especially on Boston Road. Hampden District Attorney Gulluni provides update on deadly hit and run on Boston Road in Springfield This follows a deadly hit and run crash just weeks ago. 22News spoke with community leaders about what needs to be done. Distracted driving---and cars speeding, are making Boston Road more dangerous, and it's a concern for Springfield residents. "We just witnessed a car right behind the bus trying to get around it and speed around it," says Springfield City Councilor Zaida Govan. "It's just ridiculous and I don't understand why people are doing that." Members of the community hold these traffic safety standouts on Boston Road regularly. With the recent deadly hit and run that killed a woman while she was crossing this roadway, the hope is that their message will be seen by drivers, that is they are going slow enough. Just up the street, at the intersection of Boston Rd and Harvey----two cars crashed into each other Tuesday. State leaders say they are working on solutions. State Rep. Orlando Ramos told 22News, "Road diets are something I am a fan of---reducing these double lane roads to single lane roads. But our role at the state level is to make sure municipalities have the funds necessary in order to do traffic enforcement." After that deadly hit and run, the city of Springfield has told 22News that they continue to crack down on drivers speeding on city streets. But in the meantime, Springfield residents and community leaders are begging drivers to follow posted speed limits. Road diets have been used in the city of Springfield before---most recently on State Street---which has seen a number of deadly pedestrian accidents.
