JURUPA VALLEY — Bounce back. On the course, it can mean a golfer following up crooked numbers with a score under par on the next hole. King senior Brooklyn Najera had reached the ninth tee box at Goose Creek Golf Club on Tuesday coming off of a quadruple bogey and back-to-back triple bogeys. However, with a Big VIII League girls golf match against Roosevelt in the balance, Najera delivered the ultimate bounce-back. At the 124-yard ninth hole, she hit a tee shot to 10 feet and drained her birdie putt that was the difference in King’s 210-211 victory over the Mustangs. King coach Keith Moorman sent defending league champion Emilyn Czaplicki and Sophia Llamas out in his first group, and the sophomores gave King a 10-shot lead after shooting rounds of 35 and 39, respectively. Roosevelt’s Amelia Chen shot 39 while Nichole Sun recorded a 45. “One through three, we’re as solid as it gets but we’re still trying to find that consistency from the four and five spots,” Moorman said. “If we’re going to be a team that contends for league and CIF Southern Section titles we have to eliminate those blow-up holes.” Chen made a 10-foot putt for birdie at the par-three second hole, but made bogeys on five of her next six holes before finishing with a par. Czaplicki made back-to-back birdies at the fifth and sixth holes to reach 1-under-par, spinning her tee shot from 116 yards at No. 5 back over the hole and leaving herself a three-foot birdie putt before a bogey at No. 7 returned her to even par. Llamas made one bogey over her first six holes after failing to get up and down from a collection area just behind the fifth green but finished with three straight bogeys to come home in 39. The biggest of Llamas’ five pars was a 15-foot par save at the third after she left a 40-foot uphill birdie putt short. “I could see her skipping off the green as I was rounding the corner, so I knew she did something good but wasn’t sure what,” Moorman said of Llamas’ big save. King’s Sarani Yapa (41) and Kaitlyn Cherney (48) tied Roosevelt’s Dani Tavares (42) and Lauren Grant-Timassy (47) with matching 89s in the second group. Yapa birdied her first hole but a triple bogey and double bogey left her at six-over-par 41. Tavares made seven bogeys and two pars en route to her 42.
