Bakersfield schools educate on National Voter Registration Day

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- It's National Voter Registration Day, and Cal State Bakersfield and Bakersfield College worked to get young voters registered.
"Students are the future of the country and so they are gonna need to be caring about what's happening around them, it's just about creating informed students," said Anthonio Reyes, VP of legislative affairs with CSUB.
High school seniors get a ‘bite of reality’ before heading into the real world
Anthonio Reyes helps run CSUB's booth complete with spinning a wheel to answer questions to win popsicles and helps students get registered this election year.
Reyes said, "So far we've had a little over 200 students, I'm hopeful that we can up to 500 by the end of the day."
At Bakersfield College, the student government had a booth at the farmer's market asking anyone in line if they were registered.
Elise Miller, a member of BC's student government helped run the booth, "Their vote really matters and it really does have power. If students want to see a change, they need to be the ones to make that change."
After the Farmer's market, they headed inside, to conduct a registration workshop to answer all student questions about the registration process.
How to register to vote in Kern County
Cindy Miranda, the student government president, said she votes for her family, "I come from an immigrant family, and unfortunately most of my family is not able to vote because they're not citizens and I feel that I owe that to them to vote."
To register to vote:
You must be a U.S. citizen and a California resident
You must be at least 18 years old
You must not be in prison for a felony
The last day to register is Oct. 15. Voters can register online or in person, by going to the elections office, or printing out the voter registration form, filling it out and mailing it in.
