Tuesday (Sept. 17, 2024) was National Voter Registration Day and South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson spent part of the day at Stanley County High School in Fort Pierre and T.F. Riggs High School in Pierre. Johnson spoke about the importance of registering to vote and the importance of participating in the Nov. 5, 2024, Presidential Election. She said the deadline to register to vote is 15 days before the election you wish to participate in. To register to vote in South Dakota, you must: Be a US citizen, Be at least 18 years old before the next election, Reside in South Dakota for at least 30 days prior to submitting the registration form, Not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction, Not be judged mentally incompetent in a court of law. Johnson says people can find more information about registering to vote, updating your existing voter registration information, sample ballots, lists of candidates and more from the Secretary of State’s website, sdsos.gov. She says the website also has information for those interested in learning more about the voter registration process (https://sdsos.gov/elections-voting/voting/register-to-vote/default.aspx). As another resource, Johnson says canivote.org is a non-partisan tool created by the National Association of Secretaries of State in conjunction with state election officials to help eligible voters learn how, and where, to go vote. She says people with questions can also email [email protected] or call the Secretary of State’s Office at 605-773-3537.
