KILAUEA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- With eruptions that started over the weekend at Kilauea--a new third phase of the eruption -- a new fissure opened up early Tuesday morning. And my background right now shows this new fissure that's within Nāpau Crater that we just confirmed with a helicopter overflight a few minutes ago," Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Deputy Scientist-in-Charge David Phillips told Take2 this morning. Phillips said the location is somewhat unusual. "Most of the activity in the last several years has been focused at the summit within Halemaʻumaʻu. A couple of months ago though on June 3rd we actually had the first eruption outside of Halemaʻumaʻu but it was south of the caldera to the southwest and now we're on the completely other side of Kilauea on the eastern side. These current eruptions are coming out of the east rift zone in fact the middle east rift zone." Kilauea eruption resumes, volcano alert raised from advisory to watch We're told the eruption is in a very remote location in the park with no good viewing areas to see the lava. "Not at the present time," Phillips said. "The eruption is in a very remote location in the park and there are no good viewing areas to actually see lava at this time, although people may see the plume, some of the gasses that are being erupted, and smoke from burning vegetation from a distance." As of Tuesday morning, Phillips said there is no immediate threat to any residential areas. "There could be some airborne hazards. For example some of the vog, some of the gas emissions. Currently, the wind conditions are blowing away from the communities. That's something to always be aware of during eruptions like this," The HVO team will be out in the field Tuesday to learn more about the eruption. Now that the sun is up we're out in the field and doing overflights and collecting data, and determining exactly where the eruptive activity is concentrated right now. This is the third phase of an eruption that started Saturday night. That one lasted for a couple of hours. We had a break, we restarted up again last night now again this morning. So a lot of our work today and in the coming hours will be to characterize what is this eruption doing, and what it might do,"
