NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — A University of Rhode Island (URI) student who allegedly assaulted a police officer at an off-campus party faced a judge Tuesday morning. Cody Calkins, 21, pleaded not guilty to charges of simple assault, obstructing an officer in the line of duty, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and has permission to travel home to Florida. He is due back in court in October. On Sept. 6, body-worn camera footage shows police walking up Leonard Bodwell Road to break up a house party of approximately 100 people in the Bonnet Shores neighborhood. In court, the prosecutor said an officer asked to see the ID of a female who was drinking when a man interfered. That's when Calkins allegedly grabbed the officer, who then fell to the ground. Narragansett Town Manager James Tierney played a portion of the body camera footage during a town council meeting Monday night. "You’ll see a lot of green and pavement in these videos because the officer was knocked to the ground and that’s where the camera was pointing," Tierney explained. Town Councilor Steven Ferrandi hopes the footage serves as a wake-up call for the university and urged them to invest in building more student housing so the town doesn’t "have to house 6,000 to 8,000 students."
