INDIANAPOLIS -- With less than 50 days until Election Day, a new Emerson College Polling/The Hill survey for the state of Indiana finds that U.S. Senator Mike Braun, R-Ind. is leading the gubernatorial race. According to a new poll of 1,000 likely voters, conducted earlier this month and released on Tuesday, more than 45% of respondents said they would vote for Braun for governor in November's election. This comes after Braun first announced he was running for governor in December 2022. Braun is running for the position with Micah Beckwith, a local pastor and podcast host, as his running mate. The Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Jennifer McCormick, received 34.3% of support from respondents while Donald Rainwater, the state's Libertarian candidate, received 5.8% of support in the poll. According to the results, 1.2% said they would support someone else while 13.3% said they were undecided. FOX59/CBS4 to host gubernatorial debate before November’s general election As for the job performance of Eric Holcomb, Indiana's current governor, 35.4% of respondents said they support his job performance while 31.3% said they disapprove of his job performance. The rest of the respondents, around 33.3%, said they were neutral, or had no opinion, on Holcomb's job performance. Holcomb is not able to seek reelection in 2024 because of Indiana's term limits laws. Tuesday's poll also gave some insight regarding another contested race in the state of Indiana, the state's attorney general's race. According to the poll results, Republican incumbent Todd Rokita leads Democratic challenger Destiny Wells with 49.3% of respondents stating they would vote for Rokita compared to the 35.2% who said they would vote for Wells. Out of the total, 15.5% said they were undecided. Participants in the poll were also asked about the top issues that faced the state going into November's election. The majority of the respondents said that the economy, including jobs, inflation and taxes, was the most important issue facing Indiana, while others saw education, housing affordability and abortion access as other priorities. The results surrounding the most important issues facing the state were: Economy (jobs, inflation, taxes) - 43.9% Education - 9.2% Housing affordability - 8.1% Abortion access - 7.8% Immigration - 7.7% Threats to democracy - 7.6% Healthcare - 6.2% Crime - 5.6% Foreign policy - 0.7% “Voters under 30 are most likely to rate the economy as the top issue facing their state, at 49%, while voters over 70 are least likely, at 35%," Spencer Kimball, the executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a news release surrounding the poll's release. "Instead, voters over 70 are most concerned about threats to democracy (12%) and immigration (10%),” The poll of 1,000 likely voters was conducted by Emerson College Polling on Sept. 12-13. The poll's margin of error is +/- 3%. Out of the total poll's respondents, almost 45% identified as Republicans, almost 32% identified as Democrat while around 23% identified as an independent or other. Other demographics of the poll's respondents included: Ethnicity Hispanic or Latino of any race - 3.5% White or Caucasian - 84.5% Black or African American - 8.8% Asian - 1.8% Other or multiple races - 1.4% Age range 18-29 years - 12.9% 30-39 years - 16.2% 40-49 years - 14.6% 50-59 years - 19.8% 60-69 years- 18.7% 70 or more years - 17.8% Highest level of education High school or less - 24.5% Vocational/technical school - 8.4% Associate Degree/some college - 34.6% College graduate - 21.3% Postgraduate or higher - 11.2% Gender Male - 47.5% Female - 52.1% Nonbinary or other - 0.4% According to the Indiana Secretary of State’s office, Hoosiers are able to register to vote for the 2024 General Election through Oct. 7.
