FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - After 32 years promoting Fresno City College, Kathy Bonilla's sudden passing struck Fresno City College faculty, students, and alumni who all gathered in the Old Administration Building's auditorium on Monday to bid her farewell. Senior Program Specialist Ernie Garcia emceed a memorial on Monday that sought to bring the same spirit Bonilla brought to Fresno City College, a spirit of dignity and respect along with humor and fun. "We wanted to strike a balance that was fun, but also paid a great deal of respect to that, the honor she had for this college," Garcia said. Bonilla's memorial started with a Star Wars-style title crawl, paying homage to Bonilla's deep admiration for the movie series set in a galaxy far, far away. The opening to the title crawl read, "The year was 1961. On June 22, God knew Fresno City College and the City of Fresno would need a media expert with a keen sense of humor and a big heart. So he created Kathy Bonilla." Following the title crawl, Garcia invited the college's Interim President Dr. Kim Armstrong on stage to lead everyone in the auditorium in prayer. "Dear heavenly father," Armstrong said. "I want to thank you for sending your child, your beloved daughter Kathy, to live among us and share your love for humankind through her." Following President Armstrong's prayer, along with a moment of silence, student Osmar Villa sang a rendition of "Amor Eterno," that echoed through the Old Administration Building. "Amor eterno, eternal love," Garcia said. "just like the love Kathy had for her family and friends. And then we all have for her." As colleague after colleague went up and shared their favorite stories of Kathy, the room rode a rollercoaster of emotions, knowing they would not be able to make new memories with their dear friend. State Center Community College District Chancellor Carol Goldsmith says Kathy was a good friend and mentor who was there for Goldsmith's first days as Fresno City College President. Goldsmith presented Kathy and her family with several recognitions including a proclamation from the City of Fresno making the day "Kathy Bonilla Day." Goldsmith also read a congressional record in which Congressman Jim Costa spoke about Bonilla. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor Kathy Bonilla, who made an impact on the community through outpouring of love and compassion. Her humor and laughter will remain a reminder of joy that she has filled countless lives with her kindness and love lived on in the memories of her loved ones and those who have the honor of knowing her. Congressman Jim Costa (as read by Carol Goldsmith) "So today everybody in Congress will agree on one thing," Goldsmith said. "Kathy Bonilla was a Jedi Knight."
