NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The start date for the trial of former New Orleans Police Department officer and member of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell's security detail Jeffrey Vappie has been set back. Vappie was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 19 on seven counts of wire fraud and one count of making false statements to agents with the FBI. U.S. Marshals Service warns Louisiana residents about scam calls, spoofing The charges come in connection to Vappie being at the center of a payroll fraud investigations that alleged he violated NOPD policies by billing the city for police work while attending HANO meetings. A separate investigation was conducted by the United States Attorney's Office, claiming Vappie was involved in a romantic relationship with Cantrell. According to court documents, Vappie is accused of falsifying timecards to cover personal activities. On Aug. 7, Vappie pled not guilty to those charges during an arraignment hearing. Lafourche Parish courts close due to storm damage On Monday, a federal judge moved the start date for Vappie's trial to July 14, 2025. Court documents state the move comes after attorneys on both sides requested a delay to review all the evidence before heading to trial.
