ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) - On Tuesday night there will be a show in the sky as a partial eclipse of the moon will be viewable throughout North America. The sun, earth, and moon will line up so that the moon will fall partially behind the sun's shadow. This will dim the moon and can turn it red as the suns light bends around earth. Find more information on eclipses here. The first ingredient you need for this is a full moon. That will happen Tuesday night. It also happens to be a supermoon, meaning the moon is closest to earth in its orbit (also known as perigee). It will appear bigger and brighter than a normal full moon. The second ingredient you need is the alignment of the sun, earth, and moon. This happens about half a dozen times per year somewhere on earth. The partial eclipse will peak at 10:44 pm. The third ingredient is luck with the weather. There will be some clouds around during the eclipse, but a little extra luck may help clear out some of those clouds for a brief view. Here's a great explanation video from NASA.
