TOPEKA (KSNT) - Kansans will be treated to a special viewing of the moon this Tuesday night as multiple lunar events line up in the same evening. NASA said in a recent article that people can expect to see four moon events on the night of Sept. 17. These include a full moon, supermoon, "harvest moon" and a partial lunar eclipse. Full moon A full moon comes when the moon is completely illuminated in the night sky, according to NASA. None of the moon is covered in shadow and it is the opposite of a new moon. Supermoon Supermoon events occur when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit. A supermoon can only happen when there is also a full moon present, according to NASA. The moon will appear slightly larger than normal to viewers. NASA graphic showing the difference between a supermoon and micromoon. Its name refers to an increased amount of light in the early evening hours, courtesy of the moon, which helps farmers and crews as they harvest their crops, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Partial lunar eclipse NASA said observers of the moon on Sept. 17 may also get to see a partial lunar eclipse in action. This happens when the sun, earth and moon are somewhat aligned, leading to a shadow covering part of the moon's surface. For more local news, click here.
