After a 3-day jury trial that began on September 11 and featured 12 witnesses for the prosecution, Jaheim Nix was found guilty of 1st degree murder. A press release for the State Attorney’s Office (SAO)for the Second Judicial Circuit detailed the events that lead to the murder. From the SAO: After setting up a purported gun sale with the victim, the Defendant and his accomplices traveled to Tallahassee from Gadsden County. The Defendant along with three others went into the eastern Tallahassee residence as directed by the victim. Within thirty-seven seconds of being in the residence, the Defendant and one other accomplice fired fourteen shots, striking the victim nine times. The victim died in the living room of the residence, and the Defendant and his accomplices stole the firearm the Defendant was supposed to purchase as well as one other firearm the victim had on his person. Evidence showed that the victim died with nothing more than his cellphone in his hand. This cellphone would be a critical piece of evidence: it was forensically downloaded and showed that the Defendant had been communicating with the victim via Instagram less than two minutes before the victim was murdered. The Defendant at trial argued that he was at home in Gadsden County at the time of the murder and that the messages sent by the Instagram account that was linked to his email and created by him was not actually him but instead his co-defendant with whom the Defendant shared the account. This alibi was rejected by a jury after four hours of deliberations, and the Defendant was found guilty as charged.  The Defendant was sentenced to life in prison on both counts.
