PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A course at The New England Medical Innovation Center (NEMIC) is looking to put Rhode Island on the map of health technology. The Medtech leadership program is free to all who live, work, or go to school in the state. It runs for about six months and is taught by industry professionals. NEMIC says students consist of undergrads, postgrads, entrepreneurs, and people who want to learn more about the industry. Some students come into the course with an idea ready. Smoltap is a device that stabilizes newborns in need of a spinal tap. NEMIC says the product was further developed during classes and is now in 35 hospitals throughout the country.  "Once they get through our program they're able to assist them in that endeavor to reach patients, which is the goal of this, right?" Business and Engagement Coordinator at NEMIC Andrew Williamson said. "So, for some, it's an academic activity, but I think the real mission and goal is to get products on the market that improve patient outcomes." The Program is funded by Real Jobs Rhode Island and Rhode Island Commerce. NEMIC says Boston has become a global hub for medical innovations, and they want to invest in the minds of Rhode Islanders, to drive the same success to the state.  "There are many spaces that Rhode Island has carved out success for itself. Whether it's blue tech or ocean-based things if it's defense and health technology," said Williamson. "We, as a state, can drive that industry forward. So this program, going on its sixth year, slots very nicely into that into that scope." Enrollment is now open for the course and NEMIC says they have plenty of space. Close Thanks for signing up!
