KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- The Kona Pride Festival is set to make a splash this year, bringing a full weekend of events and celebrations to Hawaiʻi Island. From its humble beginnings as a small pride party at My Bar Kona, the festival has grown into a major event, marking its fifth year with an exciting lineup of activities and performances. KHON2.com was able to catch up with Commissioner Rocco Vick who is the co-owner of My Bar Kona, one of Kona Pride's organizers and a commissioner on the Hawaii State Commission on LGBTQ+ Affairs. A weekend of festivities The celebration kicks off at the Kona Chocolate Company, a local favorite run by an LGBTQ2S+ couple. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., attendees can enjoy a delightful mix of drag entertainment, chocolate samples and cocktails. “Kona Chocolate Company is the perfect place to start our weekend. It’s a sweet spot where we can enjoy some great performances and treats,” said Commissioner Vick. After the kickoff event, the action moves to My Bar Kona for "Let’s Glow Girls", a vibrant evening featuring local drag queens and DJs. The outdoor stage will transform into a colorful spectacle, offering dancing and entertainment well into the night. Commissioner Vick highlighted the importance of this event, saying, “It’s an opportunity to celebrate our community with the fantastic local queens and deejays who keep the energy high.” Festival day highlights The festival day, held at the Marriott King Kamehameha Beach Hotel, promises to be the highlight of the weekend. This year’s event features a sprawling vendor village with over 40 booths, showcasing everything from arts and crafts to medical services. Commissioner Vick expressed his excitement, stating, “We’ve reached a record number of vendors this year. It’s amazing to see so many people come together, offering everything from unique jewelry to valuable resources for the LGBTQ+ community.” The main festival stage will host a variety of performers, including well-known drag queens like Jade Jolie and Kameron Michaels, as well as local talents like Amandla Paige. “We have some incredible headliners this year,” Commissioner Vick noted. “Jade Jolie and Kameron Michaels are big names, and Amandla Paige’s performances have been a hit for years. It’s going to be an amazing show.” Sunday’s events Sunday brings another round of fun with a pool party at the Pacific 19 Hotel, running from noon to 4 p.m. “The pool party is becoming a highlight of the festival,” said Commissioner Vick. “With food trucks, entertainment surprises, and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s a great way to unwind and enjoy the weekend.” The festivities conclude with a final dance party at My Bar Kona starting at 5 p.m. “It’s a chance for everyone to come together one last time and celebrate,” Commissioner Vick explained. Getting involved For those interested in attending, tickets for the festival are priced at $10 for general admission, while VIP passes offer additional perks, including fast access to all events and a special gift bag. “The VIP passes are a fantastic way to enhance your experience,” Commissioner Vick said. “They include a free meal at the pool party and entry into a drawing for prizes worth over $7,000.” The festival is open to all, with free admission for those 18 and under. For vendors hoping to participate, while the primary slots are full, a waiting list is available in case any spaces open up. A growing community event Kona Pride has come a long way since its early days. Commissioner Vick emphasized the festival's evolution and community impact. “We’ve grown so much over the past five years. What started as a small event at My Bar Kona has become a major celebration for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies," said Commissioner Vick. "It’s about coming together to celebrate who we are and make lasting memories.” While discussions about adding a parade to the festivities have been considered, Commissioner Vick noted that the current focus remains on improving the weekend events. “Parades are complex and costly. For now, our community is better served by spreading out the celebrations over different locations. It allows us to make a bigger impact without disrupting the town.” Kona Pride 2024 is set to be a vibrant and memorable event, showcasing the rich diversity and unity of the LGBTQ+ community.
