COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Colleton County’s sheriff is apologizing Monday for one of their deputy’s recent actions outside a community church. Surveillance video was circulated on a Walterboro community Facebook group over the weekend showing a deputy outside of his patrol unit at Cypress Creek Christian Church off Cypress Pond Road attempting to urinate on property grounds. The action occurred near a small well house on the property. That video has since been removed from the social media platform. Colleton County Sheriff Guerry “Buddy” Hill and Deputy Tuten released a joint letter apologizing to the church’s pastor, congregation, and public for the incident. Sheriff Hill and Deputy Tuten acknowledged the deputy’s actions were inappropriate; however, they said there was no malicious intent or deliberate disrespect toward the church or community. “This was a bad decision on the deputy’s part and as an abundance of caution we have requested the State Law Enforcement Division review the video and determine whether any criminal act occurred,” the letter read. The letter continued, “We would like to thank the public for bringing this incident to our attention so that we may make improvements and continue to provide the highest quality of service to our citizens.”
