BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The North Dakota Farm Bureau is throwing its support behind Measure 4, an effort to effectively eliminate the property tax in the state. On September 12, the organization issued a statement saying its membership strongly backs the initiated measure. "Last November, during the NDFB Annual Meeting, NDFB members passed a policy advocating for the elimination of the current property tax system. As a grassroots policy development organization, NDFB supports Measure 4, reflecting our members' wishes," said NDFB President Daryl Lies. "The freedom to own property is the foundation of our American Dream. We believe the passage of Measure 4 will enhance our freedom by removing valuation based taxation of our private property." Monday, the chairman of End Unfair Property Tax, Rick Becker, said the organization is grateful for the Farm Bureau's support. "The NDFB’s endorsement confirms what we’ve been saying all along – that Measure 4 will restore freedom by eliminating the unfair burden of property taxes," said Becker. "The passage of this measure will revolutionize our state’s economy and protect the fundamental right to own property without oppressive taxation." If approved, Measure 4 would prohibit political subdivisions from levying any tax on the assessed value of real or personal property, except for the payment of bonded indebtedness incurred through a certain date, and would require the state to provide replacement payments to political subdivisions of no less than the current real property tax levies.
