BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) - The Louisiana chapter of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) offers support and helpful tips for anyone impacted by Francine. According to the Louisiana Department of Insurance, flood damage is not covered under homeowners’ policies. It is covered under the National Flood Insurance Protection Program (NFIP) or a separate flood policy from a private insurer. Although it’s too soon to tell, natural disasters can cause insurance rates to go up. However, a spokesperson for NAAIA said there are many benefits to keeping your policy or getting coverage if you’re uninsured.  The obvious is recovering valuable items lost or damaged during a storm. “Step one is call your homeowner's company and report that claim because the adjusters who are coming in to look at the damage will be overwhelmed right after the storm. And so you want to get in line really quick. But the key is stopping the damage from getting worse," said Kendrick Slan, owner of Omega Insurance Group. IRS gives some relief to Francine victims in Louisiana: What to know about deadlines If you’ve experienced property damage from Hurricane Francine and you have storm insurance, here are some things you should do. Take photos and videos of the damage to your home before cleaning. Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage and secure your property. Place wet items outside to prevent the growth and spread of mold. Do not throw items away until an adjuster has seen them. Don’t start permanent repairs until the insurance adjuster advises you to do so. You can also contact FEMA if your property was damaged during Hurricane Francine. NAAIA is holding its national convention starting Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the New Orleans Marriott. They will share resources and connections to help people navigate the insurance landscape.
