BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A 5K walk and run will be held Saturday to raise awareness of the dangers of drunken driving and provide funding to help crash victims, hold DUI checkpoints and support MADD Kern County prevention programs. The Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash is returning for the 11th year, with participants gathering at the Park at River Walk at 11200 Stockdale Highway for a fun run and 5K run and march. El Grito: Mexican independence celebration in downtown Bakersfield Since 2014, the event has raised more than $600,000. Day-of registration begins at 6 a.m. The cost is $35 for adults. At 7:30 a.m., a ceremony will be held with remarks from MADD and law enforcement, DUI crash victims and their families. The Kid's Fun Run starts at 8 a.m., followed by the 5K and victim's march. According to a MADD release, Kern County ranks among the worst in the country for DUI arrests and injury crashes. In 2023, there were 550 alcohol-related crashes in Kern; 769 people were injured, 41 died. The event is presented by the Law Office of Chain Cohn Clark and Valley Strong Credit Union.
