MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - After a candlelight vigil took place to remember the lives lost to the intersection on Avenue 12 near Highway 41, the county is now taking action.  The tragic events on Avenue 12 near Highway 41 have led to many deaths in the community. ‘Slow down’: Vigil calls for change at Madera County intersection Grieving families have been urging the county to do something about it, including Shanna Robbins, who lost her daughter at the dangerous intersection.  "I want stop signs or stop lights. You know, if you stop, get a stoplight. A big rig can't speed up. You know, they go down there, they have to stop. It takes a lot to get them going again. I want turnouts. I mean, let's make it a little bit bigger," Robbins said. Crystal Wiggins lost her best friend. "Make the change not just for her, but for everybody else that's had accidents in this area," Wiggins said.  Madera County Supervisor Jordan Wamhoff reassures the community, saying action is being taken.  "I just want them to know that you know, the county is doing everything that we can to rectify the situation and make it as safe as possible," Wamhoff said.  He says they plan to widen Avenue 12. "The long-term Avenue 12 expansion is going to occur on Avenue 12 from 41 all the way through Road 40. So, it's a little more than a mile, about a mile and a half stretch of land that's going to be widened and re-striped and adding signals and those types of things," Wamhoff said.  He says this project will start early 2025 and will last 12 to 18 months. In the meantime, Wamhoff says there will be changes put into place starting Sep. 18. "We're going to be closing down Avenue 12 from Riverwalk Boulevard, which is this main street right here, all the way through Road 38. So, there's going to be a detour on Wednesday for can be re-striping a lot of Avenue 12 here and adding a turn pocket at Riverstone Boulevard Southwest and adding a temporary light signal until the permanent signal comes into place," Wamhoff said.  In addition to adding safety precautions to the road, Wamhoff says more law enforcement is needed.  "I've lobbied in Sacramento to get a higher allocation of CHP officers here in Madera County, working with our local CHP to bring other state resources in. They brought in the commercial enforcement unit to go after big rigs who are in violation and really hammering those primary collision factors that are DUI speed, unsafe turns, those types of things," Wamhoff said.  For more information on Avenue 12 improvement updates, visit the Madera County website.
