SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- Thousands of people were dancing and celebrating on the streets of downtown San Jose Sunday for Mexican Independence Day. The holiday is on Monday, but city hall honored the country and even hosted a flag ceremony on Sunday. The celebration on Sunday was not only a celebration of Mexico’s independence from Spain but also an opportunity to reflect on the strides Mexican Americans have made here in this country. "We like for people to notice it; we want people to notice it. Alejandra Vargas brought her family, also from the South Bay. She's originally from Mexico and feels accomplished having her life here. "Very happy and very proud that we can make something in another country," Vargas said. "We are still thinking about our (native) country and our people." As the music played and dancing continued, the City of San Jose observed El Grito and the raising of the flags. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan also noted this celebration honors the one-third of San Jose residents with Hispanic heritage. Most popular baby names in California, according to Social Security Administration Mahan says he's honored to speak to these community members and hopes the celebrations continue for many more years. "We have thousands of people here just celebrating a day that represents freedom -- a greater freedom of individual rights, so it is an honor to be here and celebrate," Mahan said.
