FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Heads up astronomy fans! The northern lights may make an appearance early this week. This is due to a more notable solar flare that took place on Saturday. You can read more about this by clicking below. Over 20 states have chance at seeing northern lights after solar flare The Space Weather Prediction Center is forecasting up to G3 Geomagnetic storming for Monday as a result of this solar flare. This means the northern lights can usually be seen as far south as Illinois and Oregon when this occurs. Note this is not going to be as big of a geomagnetic storm as we experienced back in May, which was when the northern lights were vivid and a rare G5 Geomagnetic storm was observed. Up to G3 Geomagnetic storming is forecast for Monday. We also look at the Kp Index when forecasting the northern lights southern viewing extent. These Kp Values describe global magnetic disturbances in near-Earth space on a scale of zero to nine. A higher value indicates the northern lights can be seen farther south. In the case of this northern lights viewing opportunity, a Kp value of 7 is forecast, which is right around what we need to see a glow along the horizon, if not slightly more than that. Here is a breakdown of the Kp Index.A Kp Index up to 7 is anticipated on Monday. Our forecast for early Monday morning before dawn is that there is a chance to see the northern lights if the aurora activity picks up before the sun rises. Your best bet is to get away from city lights, grab a camera, and look northward. Make sure you have your camera's long-exposure setting turned on. The best chance looks to be from 5 AM to sunrise to be able to see them. Here is the viewing forecast for before dawn Monday. The weather forecast looks excellent, as skies will be clear! You will want to monitor the conditions in real time before going out. To do so, visit the Space Weather Prediction Center's website here. It is also possible you can see the aurora after sunset Monday, but the chance appears to be lower locally. If you happen to capture the aurora, visit our Report It feature by clicking this link.
