GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCBD) – Georgetown leaders remind residents to avoid potentially flooded roads associated with a tropical disturbance off the South Carolina coast. Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, which could soon become Tropical Storm Helene, is expected to make landfall north of Charleston early Monday afternoon. Periods of heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and flooding are anticipated. A tropical storm warning is active for much of the coast. “We want to remind our community to not drive through flooded roadways. It is dangerous!” said Georgetown city leaders. The city said it will be monitoring roadways for flooding as the storm moves inland. Flooded roads will be barricaded. People should not move the barriers or drive around them. “If possible, limit traveling during the storm, and if you must leave be sure to give yourself plenty of time, watch for barricades and emergency vehicles, and drive safely,” the city said. Georgetown County Emergency Management said a coastal flood advisory was extended until 9 a.m. Monday and warned that causeways to and from local beaches, in low-lying areas, and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks will see minor coastal flooding overnight and into the morning. Residents and business owners are asked to bring in or secure outside items that could blow away in gusty wind, and place sandbags where flooding is likely. Georgetown County schools are closed on Monday. Students will have an eLearning makeup day on October 7.
