UPDATE 5:15PM: Fire crews knocked down the fire in the 300 block of Arthur Drive, which was initially reported to the fire department as being on Silver Sage Drive. The fire was caused by an overheated mechanical wood splitter that had been turned off after having been in use, according to Carson City Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini. There was no extension to the home and the fire stayed in a wood pile. Due to windy conditions, firefighting efforts were stepped up before it began to spread. Pedrini noted that the homeowner, who had been splitting wood, was not at fault and that he had turned off the splitter and stepped inside briefly, when the overheated machinery ignited, causing the fire. *** UPDATE: Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies was called Sunday afternoon to a fire in the area of the 5200 block of Silver Sage Drive where reportedly there is a "significant amount" of wood in the back of the home, making it a threat to the structure. Fire crews were also called nearby to the area of Arthur Street. At 2:56 p.m. Carson City Fire Department was alerted to the fire and a report of "quite a bit of wood" that was threatening to catch fire. People are advised to stay clear of the area. We will update as more information becomes available.
