On a trip to a home Dodgers game with U.S. Senate candidate Steve Garvey, you’ll quickly notice he’s the most popular man in the house. Fan after fan approached the former Dodgers first baseman as he walked the stadium hallways in early September. “Coming here is like coming home," Garvey said. "And to be around the people and how they embrace our friendship has really been phenomenal.” But can his popularity here translate to a victory at the ballot box as Garvey, a Republican, runs against Democrat Adam Schiff for the seat long held by the late Dianne Feinstein?  “We need another voice," Garvey said. "I’ve decided to be that voice to get people to stand up and participate.” Last month, an LA Times-UC Berkeley poll found Schiff leading by 20 points, but Garvey said his campaign was prepared for that. "...We did our math too," Garvey said. "We know we would be about 20 points behind after the primary just because of an aggregate number of Democratic votes and Republican votes. But what is really important is that people all over the state of California and all over the country are standing up and saying they have hope. They have somebody they know, somebody they know cares about them." "I have always said I am running for the soul of California and this country," Garvey said. "That’s what you do with the federal position. We’re targeting the independent vote, the disenfranchised democrat, the undecided, the Latino community is so important to us.” That’s why Garvey said his campaign just committed $5 million for digital, radio, and TV campaign ads, like one specifically targeting a Latino audience. “40% of Californians are Latino and we’re doing a tremendous campaign of two things: getting them to register and getting them to stand up," Garvey said. "...When Latinos say the Democrats are going to take care of us and protect us— well they haven’t.” On the national stage, Garvey previously supported former President Donald Trump over Joe Biden and that support hasn't changed with the new Democratic nominee. "The choice is Donald Trump or Kamala Harris," Garvey said. "Kamala Harris is the Joe Biden administration. Donald Trump has a record and that record was pretty well received in this country and around the world." On homelessness, Garvey wants a more thorough look at the money California has spent on addressing the issue. "I’m angered by the over 20 billion dollars that’s been spent in California supposedly on our homeless," Garvey said. "When I go back to the Senate one of the first things I'll do is a federal audit of where the money went to...Really, it's about mental health. Everybody says we have to find them shelter. But the big problem is the effect of drugs and alcohol on these people. They are at the lowest point in their life. They need help.” When it comes to crime, Garvey said he wants to see more funding and resources for law enforcement. “We’ve got to get back to law enforcement in this society and protecting that law enforcement and supporting them,” Garvey said.Over the summer, Garvey spent a week in Israel, meeting with Israeli hostage families and getting a first-hand look at some of the places Hamas attacked on October 7th.  "I stand for Israel yesterday, today, and tomorrow," Garvey said. "If we want to help Israel, I think as a country we should immediately tell Iran to stop this. They’re using all their proxies to attack this small country, our single greatest democracy that is holding the line in the Middle East. Leave them alone and let them be. Our greatest ally in the Middle East." Garvey said he'd make a good senator in part because of his consistency. "They know I’ll fight every day for six years," Garvey said. "I have a consecutive game streak of 7 and a half years, 1,200 games. I think I can fight for them on a daily basis. To be your next elected senator would be the greatest honor of my life. That’s why I wake up every day with every breath. And we’re going to win this.”
