ASSATEAGUE STATE PARK, Md. (DC News Now) -- Maryland State Parks posted on Facebook that Assateague State Park, as well as other beaches along the Maryland coast, are experiencing a significant amount of medical waste washing onshore. They add that due to this, they have restricted access to the ocean for the time being. Officials said that swimmers should not go in the water in Ocean City, Md., and Assateague State Park, Md. In Deleware, swimmers should also avoid Dewey Beach and Fenwick Island. Beachgoers are not allowed to swim, wade, surf or do any other activities in the ocean. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources told DC News Now that between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., rangers patrolling the Assateague State Park beach saw hypodermic needles that appeared used but were intact, as well as needle caps of different colors. Officials said they also found multiple used feminine hygiene products like tampon applicators and cigarillo cigar tips. There have not been any reports of people finding these items while swimming or any reports of injuries.
