Tropical trouble continues to brew in our backyard, and it’s going to lead to a messy Monday for many across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is still monitoring an area of low pressure off the Carolina coastline, giving it a 50-50 shot of becoming Tropical Storm Helene over the next 48 hours. Whether this system gets a name or not is irrelevant to us; the impacts will remain the same for the Charlotte area to kick off the workweek. Expect widespread gusty showers and storms to push in from the southeast by Monday afternoon, picking up in intensity as we head into the evening. The incoming system’s track has trended westward over the past 24 hours, bringing more impactful rain and wind across our area. Most of our 22 counties can expect anywhere between 2-4″ of rain with wind gusts approaching 40 mph over the next 48 hours. Localized flooding and scattered power outages are a strong possibility across the western half of the Carolinas. Most of the moisture should head out of our neck of the woods by Tuesday evening, although the winds won’t die down until later on Wednesday. Leftover moisture could lead to a few isolated storms in the afternoon hours between Wednesday and Friday, but the back half of the week largely looks to be drier, warmer, and sunnier. Highs will surge back into the mid-80s around the Metro during this timeframe after struggling to clear the 60s and 70s on Monday and Tuesday. Next weekend is trending drier and slightly cooler in the mid-to-upper 70s. Tonight: Cloudy and breezy. Stray shower late? Low: 66°. Wind: NE 10-20. Gusts: 25+ Monday: Gusty showers and storms, heavy at times. High: 70°. Wind: NE 15-25. Gusts: 30+ Monday Night: Heavy showers and storms. Low: 64°. Wind: NE 10-20. Gusts: 25+ Tuesday: Wind and rain early becoming more intermittent later in the day. High: 75°. Wind: N 5-15. Gusts: 20+
