1 dead after Denham Springs motel shooting, police say

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A deadly shooting involving Denham Springs police officers is under investigation, the department said.
Police responded to a call about a man who was shooting from the second floor of Motel 6 on Rushing Road around 3 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The department said officers and Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office deputies "encountered the subject armed with a firearm in the roadway near the hotel" and "law enforcement officers exchanged gunfire with the subject."
Police said the man was struck by "law enforcement gunfire" and taken to the hospital but was later pronounced deceased. DSPD identified him as Chevis Whalen, 31, of Denham Springs.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Rushing Road between South Range and Home Depot Drive is closed for the investigation, police said.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation.
