Dogs and their owners, and other people who enjoy socializing with canines, can get together and have fun at an upcoming event in North Perry Village. The second annual North Perry Village Dog Fest is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 14 in the park behind Village Hall, located at 4449 Lockwood Road. Activities will include dog contests; bounce houses and games for children; a kids coloring contest at noon; food; music; a gift auction; 50/50 raffle; and vendors. Funds raised at Dog Fest will be used to buy components for a village dog park, such as fencing, benches, dog-waste bags, a waste can and liners, and exercise equipment for canines. The event is presented by North Perry Village Police Department. Police Chief Ron Walters said the weather forecast looks like Dog Fest will take place on a beautiful day. “I’m hoping that everybody brings out their little four-legged friends and comes down and enjoys our event,” he said. Canines will get the chance to display their talents during two featured activities: a Fun Dog Show at 1 p.m. and a Dog Obstacle Course at 3 p.m. The Fun Dog Show encompasses a variety of competitions, including: • Best costume • Best biscuit catcher • Best paw shaker • Best trick • Dog with the wiggliest tail and rear • Dog that can sit the fastest, upon command Walters said last year’s show provided good entertainment for spectators. “Everybody got a big kick out of it,” he said. Festival organizers also will be staffing a food booth, with a menu offering items such as hamburgers, hot dogs, Italian sausage sandwiches, nachos with cheese and soft pretzels, Walters said. In addition, visitors are invited to buy tickets for a gift auction that features prizes such as a television, lawnmower and leaf blower. In a separate giveaway, Dog Fest is conducting a silent auction, during which people can submit written bids to win a 2025 season pass for admission to North Perry’s Townline Park. This park is located at the northern end of Townline road, on the Lake Erie shoreline. The idea to hold the inaugural North Perry Village Dog Fest in 2023 was proposed by Walters. He suggested creating a canine-focused event to raise money for construction of a village dog park. The dog park would be based within a small park on Lockwood Road, situated on the east side of the Police Department garage. The garage is located next Village Hall. “It’s a nice shaded area,” Walters said. “The utilities are close by; we can get water and electricity from the police garage. It has a nice little pavilion there already that people can sit under. A little playground also is right there, so moms can bring their kids and the dogs can play in the dog park.”
