MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A mother is now in jail after her six-year-old kindergartener was caught at a Memphis Shelby County School with a gun in their backpack on Tuesday, police say. Tyranny Gray, 26, is charged with aggravated child abuse - neglect. She is being held in jail on a $25,000 bond. Student caught with gun at Geeter K-8 School According to police, officers responded to Germanshire Elementary School located at 3965 South Germantown Road regarding an armed party call. Tyranny Gray (SCSO) Reports state that a kindergarten teacher was helping her students pack up their belongings for the day when she noticed one of her students' backpacks was unusually heavy. The teacher says when she put the backpack down she heard a sound similar to a metal object hitting the ground. That is when she says she looked inside and saw a black Taurus G2C 9mm handgun. Mother arrested after six-year-old caught with gun at school The backpack was then taken to the main office and Memphis Police along with the child's mother, Tyranny Gray, were called to the scene. Gray reportedly claimed ownership of the unloaded gun and showed officers photos of the same weapon with the serial number. Officers say she had the gun hidden under the couch inside her home. At that time, Gray was taken into custody. Tyranny Gray is due in court on Thursday morning.
