NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A system brewing in the Bay of Campeche could soon stir up trouble for the Gulf Coast, with a tropical depression possibly on the horizon. A low-pressure system has developed in the Bay of Campeche, producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The system is expected to drift northward over the next few days as it interacts with a frontal boundary. Environmental conditions are predicted to be favorable for further development, with the potential for a tropical depression to form by early or mid-next week. The system is forecast to move northward near or along the Mexican and Texas Gulf coasts. In addition, a tropical wave is moving across the Yucatán Peninsula, bringing scattered moderate convection and thunderstorms to the region, including inland areas of Mexico. The wave is expected to interact with the low-pressure system, further enhancing its development. National Hurricane Center forecasters said in their Saturday evening update that a tropical depression could form in the coming days as the system tracks northwestward to northward over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. The NHC gives the system a 60% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours. Over the next seven days, that likelihood increases to 80%. Residents along the western Gulf Coast should closely monitor updates on both the low-pressure system and the tropical wave.
