FOX21 News first shared this story on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from The Humane Society of Pikes Peak (HSPPR), detailing Bear's two-year ordeal of being lost while his family, who desperately searched for him before being relocated with the military to New York. PREVIOUS STORY: HSPPR helps lost “Bear” find his family after two years Many readers connected with Bear's story and requested updates. FOX21 contacted HSPPR, which then directed us to the volunteers instrumental in Bear's reunion. Linda Lee, the admin for the Facebook page, 719 Lost and Found Pets of Colorado Springs, provided details and photos about the community's efforts to care for Bear. Linda said Bear went missing from a pet sitter's house on Fillmore Street, near the VA hospital, on April 14, 2022. Good Samaritans Devynne and Chad saw Bear in the area and posted about him online. They put out food but were unable to get close enough to secure him. According to Linda, security guards at the nearby apartment complex, where Bear often hung out, grew attached to him and gave him names like Bruno, Bernard, and Houdini as they helped care for him. One guard noted that Bear was an adept dumpster diver, easily jumping in and out of dumpsters to find food. Linda, along with volunteers Tami and Amber, had been reuniting lost dogs with their families for five years. When they saw the post about the wandering dog, they decided to help. Tami scouted the area, gathering information from Devynne and the security guards. She went out every night for a week to feed and condition Bear to come for food at specific times. After a week, Amber and Tami set up a trap and waited. Meanwhile, Linda checked their lost and found pet group and discovered a report of a missing St. Bernard in the area. She contacted the owner, Brandy, and confirmed that the dog was still missing. When Brandy saw the pictures and compared the markings, she was 99% sure that it was her dog. Within 45 minutes of setting the trap, Amber and Tami caught Bear. A microchip scan confirmed it was indeed the same dog lost two years ago. The focus then shifted to ensuring his well-being and arranging his return to his family in New York. Danielle from Making Tracks Dog Camp & Pet Care agreed to board Bear while arrangements were made, providing him with a safe place to decompress. The volunteers then arranged for Bear to be examined at Bijou Animal Hospital, which was Bear's previous vet. They remembered him and covered all of his medical needs. Laken at The Furologist: Pet Grooming gave Bear a makeover, helping him regain his confidence. Traci, a former coworker of Linda, founded Serendipity Pet Transport LLC., a veteran-owned company that helps ease the stress of moving pets across the country. With a huge smile on her face, she reassured him, and his tail began to wag. Now Bear spends his days lounging on his bed near his family, or rolling in the grass at his new home, and Brandy and her family are thrilled to have their family whole again. Despite generous donated services, expenses were adding up. 719 Lost and Found Pets of Colorado Springs turned to their community for help, and within 48 hours, all costs were covered through donations.
