Brittni Mason has a penchant for jewelry that sparkles — and Sept. 7 during the Paralympics in Paris, she added another piece of hardware that will shine amid an extensive and growing collection. The West Geauga graduate took home her second individual silver medal and fourth of her Paralympic career with a runner-up finish in the T46-47 classification of the women’s 200-meter dash. Mason recorded a time of 25.18 seconds to place behind gold medalist Anna Grimaldi of New Zealand, who went 24.72. There’s always athletes in the class getting faster. So it’s very challenging to get to the finals and even place top three.” Mason had the additional challenge of competing out of Lane 8 emerging from prelims and did her utmost to make it work. “Oh gosh, so trying to figure out how to run the race out of Lane 8, it’s either I get out really fast and make them chase me, which is pretty much what I have to do because I couldn’t see anyone in front of me, so they’re able to come off my speed off the curve, and that makes me have momentum so I have to go,” Mason said. “Because I can’t see anyone behind me. So it’s definitely more different than being able to chase, like I was able to in prelims vs. running in the final.” As Mason closes up her second trip to the Paralympics, she spoke to Johnson about the flair she brings to her craft. “On the track, I always know I’m bringing the bling,” Mason said. “The little earrings. The little bow. My nails. All of that. My little Paralympic necklace. But also off the track, I do have two Master’s degrees and an undergrad and a license. So still trying to get that education while also being a professional athlete.” Thailand’s Sasirawan Inthachot was the bronze medalist in 25.20. Mason had earlier taken silver in T46-47 100 on Sept. 3. West Geauga grad Brittni Mason embracing second Paralympics, prominent role in American para movement
