The Browns are riding their longest winning streak in season openers since returning to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999 — two games. Until they beat the Panthers, 26-24, in Charlotte, N.C.. on Sept. 11, 2022, and the Bengals, 24-3, on Sept. 10 last year, the Browns’ only victory in a season opener came in 2004 when they beat the Ravens, 20-3, at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns will try to make it three in a row when they host the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. Sept. 8 at Huntington Bank Field. This one has a little more spice to it because it’s a nationally televised game, seven-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Tom Brady is making his debut as a FOX color analyst and the opponent is the Cowboys. The ‘Boys won’t be back in Cleveland until 2032. “I did see a map of the game or whatever, and it was like the whole thing was Cleveland with Dallas pretty much,” Browns 11th-year left guard Joel Bitonio said. “So it’s basically a national game. It’s exciting. “We know the Cowboys are a big brand. We know the Browns are a big brand and we don’t play ’em very often. So I think it’s an exciting matchup and we’re pumped for it. I mean the guys have worked so hard to be ready for this Week 1 and hopefully we go out there and perform.” Playing the Cowboys means going against quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, running back Ezekiel Elliott plus edge rushers Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence. Playing the Cowboys also means facing two rookie starters on their offensive line — left tackle Tyler Guyton and center Cooper Beebe. The Browns’ veteran defensive line, led by ends Myles Garrett and Za’Darius Smith plus tackles Shelby Harris and Dalvin Tomlinson can chew on the rookies like an in-game meal. “It’s a new challenge,” Garrett said after practice Sept. 6. “Just as the league is new to (Guyton), he’s new to us. We have to prepare for what he brings to the game and the uniqueness that he provides — his skillset as well as his attributes, being a taller guy, being a little bit more mobile, athletic, and moving pretty well. “And he’s been able to go against a really good pass rush over there in Dallas. So, you know, he’s going to be prepared, but I offer a different flavor.” The opener will mark the first regular season game for Ken Dorsey as Browns’ offensive coordinator and the first for Jerry Jeudy as a Browns wide receiver. Deshaun Watson is beginning his third season as a Browns quarterback. He completed 16 of 29 passes for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception when the Browns beat the Bengals in the season opener last year. He was sacked three times. It will be Watson’s first game since a shoulder injury last Nov. 12 ended his 2023 season. “My emotions are super high, just like everyone else,” Watson said on Sept. 4. “Just getting back for the first game, the start of the season, getting out there and just letting all the hard work that you put in in the offseason show on the field. “And I think just to be back in the locker room, just to be prepping again is one of my biggest wins this offseason. Just to be able to make it back to Week 1 and be in the position I am to go out there and compete Sunday to help this team win.” The Browns are considered Super Bowl contenders, but head coach Kevin Stefanski, since he arrived in 2020, has preached “one game at a time.” Nothing is novel about that. “Everybody wants to go to the Super Bowl, but does everybody have what it takes to do what you have to do day in, day out every time you step on the field to get there?” safety Grant Delpit said. “I’ve never been there, but we have guys that have. “Everybody wants to get somewhere, but do you do what it takes? It’s a lot of talk that goes into it. We let our actions do the talking.” “So do the Browns have what it takes?” Deplit was asked. “Who knows? I don’t know,” Delpit said. “We’re gonna see this year. If we do what we’re supposed to, no doubt about it.” Safety Rodney McLeod with the Eagles and safety Juan Thornhill with the Chiefs both played on Super Bowl teams. Roster moves The Browns signed wide receiver/punt returner Jaelon Darden to the active roster from the practice squad. They also elevated CB Mike Ford Jr. and T Germain Ifedi from the practice squad. The Browns also signed WR David Bell to the practice squad. Tom Brady observes before a Rams-Cowboys preseason game Aug. 11.
