Dear Editor,As September 11th approaches once again, we are reminded of one of the darkest moments in our nation’s history. It was a day that left an indelible mark on our collective hearts and changed the course of our country forever. On that day, we saw tremendous loss but also extraordinary acts of heroism. It is in this spirit that we, the Jersey City Police Superior Officers Association, reflect on the sacrifices made by so many, including our own officers, who rushed across the river to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. For us in Jersey City, the memories are particularly close to home. We watched the plumes of smoke rise from across the river, but more than that, we were among the first to respond. The men and women of the Jersey City Police Department were there, standing shoulder to shoulder with their fellow first responders from across the region, saving lives, providing aid, and exemplifying what it means to serve with honor and integrity.Today, more than two decades later, the impact of that horrific day still lingers. Members of the Jersey City Police Department and other first responders continue to be diagnosed with illnesses linked to their exposure to the toxic conditions at Ground Zero. Tragically, some have already succumbed to these illnesses, their lives cut short as a result of their dedication to duty. For those who continue to fight these health battles, we owe a debt of gratitude and a commitment to ensure they receive the care and support they deserve. As President of the Jersey City Police Superior Officers Association, I urge our community to come together in honoring not just the memory of those we lost on September 11, but also those who continue to suffer the effects of their service. Let us remember the heroes who rushed toward danger to protect this great nation, and let us never forget those still in uniform today who are diagnosed with 9/11-related illnesses. Their sacrifice is ongoing, and our support must be unwavering.Jersey City has always been a community that stands together in the face of adversity. As we commemorate this solemn anniversary, let us honor our fallen, support those who are still fighting, and remain united as a community that cherishes the values of service, sacrifice, and resilience. In remembrance and solidarity,Captain Pawel WojtowiczThe post Letter: Let’s Remember September 11 and Honor Our Heroes appeared first on Jersey City Times.
