YUCAIPA — Yucaipa football coach Justin Price was happy with the T-Birds’ offensive plays, but he was very unhappy about the excessive number of penalties in Yucaipa’s 41-17 victory over Shadow Hills in Friday’s nonleague game. Price, who is in his 15th year as head coach at Yucaipa, was generally pleased with his team’s performance. The T-Birds made adjustments on offense at halftime, and reduced their number of penalties after the break. The improvements in the second half mean Price and his team don’t have to dwell on the mistakes in the coming week. “In the second half, we played really well,” Price said. On Yucaipa’s first drive, the T-Birds went with a no-huddle offense. “The referee needed to touch the ball before plays could start. We were calling signals before we started a play and they called procedure penalties against us,” Price said. The officials were very strict in enforcing the rules. When that happens, players and coaches have to make adjustments. Neither coach made visible any displeasure about the calls. Yucaipa was assessed 12 penalties for 125 yards, but the T-Birds were flagged only three times in the second half. Price was also happy with a two-minute drill when Yucaipa drove 79 yards in eight plays. Junior quarterback Deace Turner ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 5.5 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Turner ran three times for 31 yards before the scoring play, which gave Yucaipa a 20-10 halftime advantage. “He (Turner) is a double threat,” Price said. Turner rushed for more than 100 yards the prior week in Yucaipa’s victory over Silverado. “We wanted to use up the clock in that game, but (this time) we wanted to open the offense up and throw the ball more.” Earlier in the drive, Turner threw the ball effectively. He completed a 45-yard pass to Damian Miller and found Eric Moreno with a 19-yard pass that moved the ball to the Shadow Hills 17-yard line with 38.4 seconds remaining in the first half. “We have a lot of good receivers,” Turner said, who completed passes to six teammates. “We knew where their weak spots would be. Our receivers are not only football smart, they are defense smart – they know where the defenders will be.” Turner finished with 104 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 13 carries, but he also completed 13 of 18 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Yucaipa’s defense, which had yielded 37 points in a road victory over Silverado last week, had three interceptions. Two of the thefts were by senior Hunter Holland. Both interceptions were returned inside the 40-yard line. If the wet pump temperature had been 92 degrees, the game could not have been played. “That’s the lowest it’s been in quite a while,” he said. Smoke from the Line fire was visible from the south end of Yucaipa’s stadium. Carpenter said if the wind was blowing toward the south, they would have had to cancel the game. “Usually, we get a breeze from east to west so we didn’t have any problems,” he said.
