RIVERSIDE — Ramona defensive back Jordan Daniel lurked behind a receiver, waiting for an opportunity to pounce. “Coach tells us to stay on our man until we know we can go make a play,” the senior said. And make a play he did. Daniel jumped the route, intercepted the ball and didn’t look back as he returned it for a touchdown. The late score gave Ramona (3-0) a four-point lead, one it wouldn’t relinquish en route to a 31-26 comeback victory over Hillcrest (2-1) on Friday night at Arlington High. After trailing 20-10 at the end of the third quarter, the Rams tallied three touchdowns – all of which came off turnovers – to remain undefeated. The Trojans entered the third frame leading 13-10 after scoring touchdowns on their first and last drives of the first half. Hillcrest then methodically drove 70 yards on 10 plays – all runs – to begin the second half. Junior quarterback Matthew Ramos completed the series by spinning his way into the end zone to extend the lead to 10 points. Hillcrest then recovered a fumble by Ramona senior running back Sincere Tolbert on the following drive, but Ramos’ first interception of the game yielded the ball back to the Rams, who eventually scored to cut the lead to three early in the fourth quarter. Buried on his own 9-yard line for his next offensive snap, Ramos rolled left while looking for an open man. Instead, he found Daniel. “The word I’m using is resilient,” Rams coach Ken Mushinskie said. “They (the defense) gave up a couple big ones in the first half, but that pick-six really changed the tides. I think it turned the momentum towards our favor.” When the ball returned to Trojan hands two drives later, it didn’t remain there for long. The Rams ran the ball the 16 yards they needed to reach the end zone, making it a two-possession game with less than two minutes left. Ramos and the Hillcrest nearly mounted their own improbable comeback, scoring in just 50 seconds by way of a 45-yard touchdown pass to cut the Rams’ lead to five. Yet the second miracle didn’t come. “Bottom line, I put them in some spots there at the end that was maybe a difference in the game,” Hillcrest coach Travis Carter said. “So I got to do a better job. That one’s on me.” After forcing an incompletion on the two-point attempt, Ramona iced the game by recovering the onside kick attempt. With the contest in hand, Daniel and the Rams celebrated on the sideline as senior quarterback Kody Shinar kneeled down run out the clock.
