Euclid is seeking bids to construct new medians to improve pedestrian safety along Lake Shore Boulevard between East 228th Street and Luikart Drive City Councilperson Tara Hannum, at the request of Planning and Zoning Director Patrick Grogan-Myers, submitted an ordinance at the most recent City Council meeting to start advertising bids for approximately $350,000 for the work. The construction is part of the city’s 2023 Lake Shore Boulevard Water Main and Walkability Project and will add three more medians to the city’s five, already built, “concrete curbed, tree-planted medians, three of which included pedestrian crosswalks with rapid fire beacons,” according to planning documents. The reason for the additional construction, according to planning documents, is to help propel the first Goal of the Master Plan Connect focus area which is “Improv(ing) access to the Lakefront via paths and connections that link all Euclid neighborhoods to this amenity. The Master Plan also calls for a focus in the Downtown and Lakefront area to ‘improve existing crosswalks and add additional ones, if warranted, to improve pedestrian safety, and especially across Lake Shore Boulevard”. In response to a question from City Council on the difference between the new construction and the ones already built, Grogan-Myers said that they would be similar, but that the plants that would be in the medians would be more colorful and would be planted in a more centered fashion. He said the goal was so they wouldn’t appear overgrown, as some people have complained in the past that the plants look untamed. He went on to say that the funding will come from the American Rescue Plan Act fund, as well as the Downtown Euclid TIF and HarborTown TIF.
