SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The ceremonial lighting of the flame at Springfield's Greek Cultural Center officially kicked off the three-day Glendi Greek Festival at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. "We're very proud to be American, but we also love being Greek, you know we love that part of the heritage," said Anna Svadeba of Springfield. For many, this is not their first time at Glendi as they celebrate their roots with traditional Greek music and dancing. Some make sure to be the first in line for authentic food. "People came early it opened at 5 and one woman was waiting here at 2:30 this afternoon so they love the Greek food," said General Chairman of Glendi, Xenophon Beake. The festival is expected to bring over 10,000 people from near and far. One attendee who travels from Florida is excited to be back and reconnect with the Greek community. "It's great! I wish the rest of the country felt like this, it's a real good thing," said Stan Wojnar of Florida. Not only is it a fun event for the community, but all proceeds go towards supporting the St. George Cathedral. A portion of these funds will help repair the bell tower, which was damaged by a lightning strike last year. The priest is hopeful that with the community support, the repairs can be completed soon, but there is a still long way to go. A new fundraising campaign will also be launched by the church to further raise money for its completion.
