NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Following the recent robbery at Old Dominion University, parents tell 10 On Your Side they are still concerned about how the school handled this situation. ODU students, police react to armed robbery on campus, suspect still at large The robbery happened Sept. 3, 2024, at the Scotland House Dormitory. Police responded to the dorm just after 2 a.m. after three armed men displayed their guns and demanded personal belonging from students. Two suspects, Quincy Banks and Sekai Hughley, are facing charges, while a third suspect, Isiah Harrison, is still at large. Now a mother and daughter are unhappy. Melanie Decker, parent of ODU student Izzie Decker, said that, to this day, she still wasn't notified about the robbery. She would like to see some change to ODU's emergency line of communication to protect students on campus. "I do not feel like the proper protocols are in place," said parent Melanie Decker. "They weren't notified during the incident to go into a lockdown mode or seek shelter, or safety, and I just don't feel like that's acceptable." Decker's daughter, Izzy Decker, had no idea someone on her campus was robbed until she received many text alerts and even Googled "ODU robbery." Izzy Decker said she wasn't notified by the school until the next day, and was taken aback by the lack of communication because she is usually out walking to the store or even hanging with friends at night. She said that without immediate alerts, the outcome could have been worse. "It's just the email alerts that come out after the incident, which it's nice to be updated, but when I'm notified at 1 p.m. the day after the incident, or like the morning after the incident, it's not really helpful," Izzy Decker said. "The situation could've gone so much worse, and the lack of urgency and notification for students to seek shelter, lock down, lock your room, don't get out of your car, anything like that, the sense of urgency was very much not there." 10 On Your Side reached out to Old Dominion, who said it's up to the students to sign up for the safety alerts. "Old Dominion University uses ODU Alerts as its emergency alert and notification system, capable to sending messages to ODU students, faculty and staff email addresses, cell phones and/or land lines. ODU Police, with the senior administration, evaluate whether a threat is ongoing to determine how a message will be sent: ODU Alerts or timely warning. "Immediate notifications sent through ODU Alerts are used to communicate campus emergencies and closures. A timely warning is used to notify the ODU community of serious or ongoing threats once pertinent information is available. "All ODU students are automatically registered in the ODU Alerts system with the primary cell phone number they provided at registration. Students can manage their account and add additional numbers to receive notifications through the secure myODU Portal. Faculty and staff can opt-in to receive alerts. Users may select up to six different methods of contact but are encouraged to list themselves as the first point of contact to ensure ODU Alert messages are received in an emergency."
