OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - It was an emotional night as Shawnee Mission Northwest opened its season with a 28-14 victory over Olathe North. Many students and fans wore the same shirts the entire team wore to school Friday that said "Northwest Strong." It also contained a green heart with the #55 etched in the program forever. That 55 was also shaved in the haircut of one senior running back. #22 Ray Gomez Regalado was Ovet's older brother. Ovet Gomez Regalado,15, was taken from Shawnee Mission Northwest conditioning drills in critical condition on August 14th and died two days later. Shawnee Police later launched an investigation into the death. "I just think it impacts the whole school and everybody comes together," Brooklyn Rubel said. In the days after his death marketing students came up with a way to support the Shawnee Mission Northwest community and Ovet's family with the t-shirts with his number and favorite color. $10 from the $15 of each shirt sold goes to the family. "We had parents come and buy them, I've seen tons of people throughout the school everywhere I look throughout the day there's someone wearing one of our t-shirts. Green for Ovet it's a really great feeling the way we've contributed to our community," Elizabeth Armenta said. Many of those shirts were in the stands as cheerleaders wore green ribbons in their hair and the band wore them on their lapels. "The leadership we've seen from many of the seniors on this football team has just been remarkable. So out of a really difficult situation, we've seen that we can move forward together and just honor Ovet and remember the light that he was the smile that he gave," Shawnee Mission Northwest Principal Dr. Lisa Gruman said. "Our community is embracing the friendship smile and compassion shown by Ovet Gomez Regalado as we carry his memory forward we are challenged to live our life more Ovetti," the public address announcer told the crowd before the game as Ovet's photo was shown on the scoreboard. As the team took the field, Ovet's brother was ready to greet them with what we've been told is the trademark Gomez Regalado smile. He then led the team out arm and arm for the game's opening coin toss.
