JAY COUNTY, Ind. — A student was hospitalized after a school bus and garbage truck were involved in a crash Friday morning. According to a press release, Indiana State Police responded to the intersection of State Road 1 and Boyce Street in Jay County after receiving word of a two-vehicle crash that had occurred there around 7:48 a.m. After a preliminary investigation, ISP determined a Jay County School Corporation bus was stopped at the intersection to pick up students. At the time of the crash, the bus had its stop arm extended and its red lights flashing. The driver of a Waste Management truck approached the intersection from State Road 1 while the bus was stopped. The truck did not stop before it entered the intersection and hit the back of the bus. Per ISP, one student was transported to Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital with minor injuries after the crash. State police indicated both drivers have cooperated with law enforcement's investigation and voluntarily submitted to testing. Officials do not believe drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. As of this article's publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
