For the first time all season, Gilmour found itself behind in a game. Hawken took over after a turnover on downs to and scored the opening touchdown in the Sept. 6 clash. The Lancers then responded to score the next five en route to the 33-13 victory. They are now 3-0 on the season, as Hawken fell to 2-1. The Hawks took over after Gilmour’s second drive stalled out on a bad snap on a punt and took over at the Lancers’ 12. Three plays later, Donovan Moorhead found Miles Hamilton for the six-yard score. Coach Tom Kaufman and his players kept their composure, however. While it was the first time they trailed in the season, he was confident the team would respond well. “Our defense played great all game,” Kaufman said. “We had zero panic. It was a bad snap on our part in the poor weather. I take responsibility for that. But we had a lot of confidence going into this one.” Despite the rain all contest, Gilmour turned to the air early and often in the first half. Cooper Panteck was 9-for-15 for 139 yards at the break. Gilmour marched down the field after Hawken’s scoring drive, and it was capped by an Anthony Iliano three-yard score from the wildcat. Hawken’s next drive stalled out and Panteck found Sean Dillard for a 51-yard score two plays into the possession. The two would connect again two series later, this time from 32 yards out. Dillard finished with 109 yards on six catches, all in the first half. Panteck knows the multifaceted game helps the Lancers be ready for any situation. “I think we have one of the most balanced offenses,” Panteck said. “The O-Line is ready for it. We have receivers on the outside. Our running backs are great on the inside. It makes it great when you have a threat to run at all times and be able to pass the ball while having the protection to go with it.” The Lancers’ offensive gameplan did a 180 in the second half, as Panteck only had one pass all half to finish the game 10-for-16 for 175 yards and the two scores. But the running game, led by CJ Santagata, was ready to shoulder the load. The junior finished with 12 carries for 92 yards and an eight-yard score on Gilmour’s opening possession of the second half. “One of the best things Coach (Rick) Lytle said this offseason was, the definition of a balanced offense isn’t to run and pass 50% of the time,” Panteck said. “But it’s doing what you have to do at all times. That’s what we did today. We threw it when we had to and ran it when that was right. It’s a huge message to the defense, too. They had our back, and it’s great to have a defense that’s ready at all times like that.” The Lancers also controlled the game on the defensive side and on special teams. Nathan Lennon blocked a punt on Hawken’s opening drive and recovered it in the end zone. The defense held Hawken to 159 total yards and tallied three sacks. Kaufman realizes the win matters in the big picture as well. Both teams are a part of the crowded Division III, Region 9 picture. Any leg up is a huge advantage. “It was important because it’s a rivalry game,” Kaufman said. “Every game is important in this region, and I felt like our guys had a lot of fun playing in this weather. We had a lot of up and down on special teams. We made some plays, gave up some but it was an overall team win and I’m proud of that.” Hawken added a touchdown late as Moorhead found Mitch Greenberg for a 26-yard score on the far sideline. Moorehead finished the contest 11-for-24 for 116 yards and two scores. Hawken aims to get back in the win column when it travels to Edgewood for a cross CVC game Sept. 13. Gilmour remains on the road with a trip to NDCL on tap as it looks to remain undefeated. THE SCORE Gilmour 33, Hawken 13
