An Elgin police officer shot and killed a dog that was attacking its two owners, police said. The dog turned on the man and woman as they were walking it about 5 p.m. Thursday in the 900 block of High Street, according to a post on the Elgin Police Department Facebook page. Officers responding to the call arrived to find the couple in the throes of the attack and were forced to shoot the animal, the report said. The owners, both 28, were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Witnesses said the dog initially became angry at another dog before turning on its owners, according to television news accounts. The dog initially attacked the woman, and the man was injured as the tried to intervene, witnesses said. Initially officers tried to lure the dog away from the woman, police said, but were unsuccessful. The officer has not been placed on leave for the shooting but no other information was available from police as of Friday afternoon. Mike Danahey is a freelance reporter for The Courier-News.
