The opening ceremony is a spectacle of music, dancing, lights, and fireworks as the host country celebrates its culture and welcomes athletes from around the world. The events are several hours long and include a parade of the top competitors for each country. Everyone unites and sees the lighting of the Olympic torch before events spread over the next few weeks that determine who will win gold medals.
