MUMFORD, N.Y. (WROC) — Celebrating America's birthday by officially becoming a U.S. citizen. Dozens of now U.S. citizens taking the oath of allegiance at the Genesee Country Village and Museum's annual ceremony. People coming internationally to the United States from countries including Brazil, India, and Jamacia completing their journey of becoming a U.S. citizen. That was celebrated here at a naturalization ceremony at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. "This is home now! It's like being born again to another place, it's exciting," Tatiana Plazas Torres, who was naturalized Thursday said. Across the Genesee Country Village and Museum, many celebrations taking place to honor America's birthday. Including a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and a naturalization ceremony welcoming new American citizens. "28 individuals from 19 different countries, and really reflect on our nation's past and where we're going and how we can work together to make the nation more free for all," Mary Challman, the Senior Director of Interpretation for Genesee Country Village and Museum told News 8. The Village Square briefly turned into a courtroom as Western District of New York Judge Honorable Frank P. Geraci Jr. swore in each person. Taking place on Independence Day, those who were naturalized say it made it all the more special. Adding, how relieved they feel to have reached this step. "I'm really happy. It was very touching, the words of the judge. I cry a little because every word means a lot. Especially a country that respects the freedom, and the individuality. It's very important. I'm very happy," Plazas Torres said. "It sinks into me that after ten years, I become a U.S. Citizen, and it's on Fourth of July too," Rhodette Gayhart said. And share this piece of advice for those trying: "Believe in yourself. If you love this country and you believe it's possible, it's possible," Plazas Torres said. The Genesee Country Village and Museum says they've been holding ceremonies for more than 20 years, and hope to the number of people naturalized continue to increase.
